Excitement set in once our flights were booked, but our expectations of our upcoming trip to Athens were low overall. Our friend Gloria’s birthday was coming up, and alongside our other regular travel buddy Nadine, the four of us were in desperate need of a winter getaway. The temperature was forecast to be in the low 20s so we knew we were set to enjoy a warmer December weekend than we would have experienced stuck in London, however Athens wasn’t exactly on our bucket list; the price just happened to be right.

We landed in Greece on a temperate Friday evening in December and headed straight to our apartment by cab. It had already won us over online but we were immediately impressed with the sheer size of our Athens home. Although it was on the ground floor, it had the feel of a loft apartment due to its split-level structure and fixtures. It had a large kitchen and dining/living space, with the sofa bed positioned in front of the feature wall; a giant light wall that makes a vlogger’s precious ring light look like a measly match stick in comparison.
We promptly began to record a grand tour of our Luxury Suite for the vlog. A private courtyard (cute) complete with an outdoor shower (puzzling). A sleek downstairs bathroom in addition to the en suite upstairs meant that we had a woman-to-bathroom ratio of 2:1 – winning! Upstairs, the bedroom had little natural light but it had ample space for two. Most enjoyable, though, was the shared Jacuzzi on the rooftop – it may as well have been private, as we never once engaged in a tug-of-war with other guests for time in the Jacuzzi. On one warm Mediterranean evening, we took our Bluetooth speaker, wine and the glasses from our apartment to sip from the tub; with a night time view of the beautifully lit Parthenon as it towered over the city, this was nothing short of bliss!

Breakfast options were served to us each morning but this was nothing to write home about. Despite this, our apartment was pivotal in turning our expectations of Athens around, partly because of where we were located and the amount of things to do locally that meant we didn’t have to travel far at all (including finding alternative options for breakfast). Not only were we a stone’s throw away from the subway (Keramaikos), we also had a variety of bars and restaurants to choose from. We ate at Gazi College to celebrate Gloria’s birthday and routinely had lunch and dinner at Cartone – what can we say, we’re creatures of habit! We partied at the Penthouse and Lohan, which fortunately (and surprisingly) gave us our music preference of choice and even made new Greek friends.
Overall, our stay at the 47 Luxury Suites was comfortable and would definitely warrant a return to the same place. It was perfect for the girl gang and it helped that the property manager had also been kind and reasonable. That Jacuzzi night we mentioned? We managed to break every single glass we took up to the rooftop due to a loose plank of wood on the decking. We’re sure by now it’s fixed, but we are thankful that we were pardoned of paying the damages. Plastic cups next time around!
