If you’ve ever thought about going on a wellness retreat, Reign x Shine is the one to go for. Organised by two wonderful women, Maya and Trudie, Reign x Shine is a luxury wellness retreat for women of African and Caribbean descent and aims to be a safe space for sisters to focus on their physical health and mental well-being.
When we signed up, we were so excited – the countdown was real! This was probably my first step in doing something for my mental health and putting myself first. It really felt like I was ‘adulting’ in a sense. Like I’m doing something responsible for me.
- Everything was planned to a T
If you are a stickler for organisation, this is the right retreat for you. There was literally no stone left unturned and nothing that wasn’t thought about or considered, it was like they had already planned what I thought. From a schedule of the day, down to cute branded bag tags to confirm which rooms our luggage will be going to when we arrived.
- When they say experts, they mean experts
Danielle Bottone from Journey On really came through with the activities and tasks to make us think about the things we may have blocked out in our subconscious over time. The range of emotions across the room made it evident that Danielle knew what she was doing – she always gave the opportunity to take a break or disengage if the tasks were triggering in any way.
Kelechi Okafor delivered her Twerk Werkz class, and my goodness. When I tell you I had worked every part of my body, I felt like I was broken from using muscles I never knew I had. But Kelechi said to me ‘stop feeling sorry for yourself,’ and I felt that. I got over it and shook what my mama gave me!
Trudie Eli-Tatum took me back to my youth with her BeyFitness class as we danced to Destiny’s Child ‘Say My Name’; I gave it all the music video fierceness I had in me and it was a great class that gave me the jolt of energy I needed to start that day.
- Food, glorious food
The food was on tap! They even packed breakfast and drinks for all guests to devour on the coach on the way; Lulu has been addicted to yoghurt, honey and granola ever since. There were full meals provided that were simply gorgeous, and in between meals, the organisers had the snacks constantly at the ready! I ate an unhealthy number of flapjacks and enough of those Sunbites crisps to last me a lifetime – in the spirit of wellness fruit was an option of course, but I made my choice!
- Location, Location, Location
The Wotton House was perfect for the retreat. It was the ideal distance so you felt like you were going away, but it was also close enough to not find it too difficult getting home. The grounds were beautiful, offering a great space for reflection and there was a spa facility too. What more could we ask for?
